McDowell our leading light for Lytham

WHILE all three of Ulster's Major winners drew confidence from Portrush, Graeme McDowell should put an unforgettable week on the links to best use in the forthcoming British Open.

With a preponderance of left-to-right shots required at Lytham, McDowell will feel especially comfortable, the Portrush local having shown his true form when, at last, he escaped the clutches of the weather to post a 66 in the final round of the Irish Open.

If Rory McIlroy struggled with the slow pace of the greens, he led in 'greens in regulation', while a couple of impressive shots he has added to his repertoire suggest he is better equipped than ever before to handle Open adversity.

Darren Clarke has all the shots and, his confidence refreshed by Portrush, he should make a solid defence of the Claret Jug.

McDowell, however, is the man for Lytham.
