MATTEO MANASSERO (20), showed remarkable composure as he ground down Simon Khan over four holes of sudden-death to become the youngest winner of the BMW PGA – so much so that he will now be fancied to make maximum impact at next month's US Open.

Since losing seven kilos in a serious fitness push over the winter, the Italian (left) looks lean, almost mean and is driving his golf ball a good deal further. Yet his accuracy from tee to green and confidence with the putter could give Manassero an edge at Merion.

Boos are certain to echo around the famous Philadelphia venue in support of Boo Weekley (39), who clinched his place at the US Open by winning his first PGA Tour title in five years at Sunday's Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley has also been invited to play the US PGA Championship at Oak Hill.

It will be his first appearance in a Major since the 2009 British Open at Turnberry.
