Maguires in frame to face US
LEONA MAGUIRE'S impressive achievement in retaining the French U-21 title at St Cloud on Monday highlights the challenge she and twin sister Lisa, aged just 15, are making for a place on the Curtis Cup team to play the USA in Boston next June.
The GB and Ireland team will be named after the Scottish Women's Open Strokeplay (Helen Holm Trophy) from April 23-25.
Meanwhile, the women's inter-provincial series starts today at The Island where holders Leinster are chasing a seventh consecutive title.
Former international Maria Dunne of Skerries is in good form and she joins Aedin Murphy, Mary Dowling, Karen Delaney, Deirdre Smith, Louise Mernagh, Ciara Butler and Rachel Cassidy on the team.
A young Munster side, which includes current internationals Sarah Cunningham and Gillian O'Leary, plus Girls international Laura McCarthy, will offer a strong challenge.
Ulster last won the trophy in 1989, but can be optimistic, as they call on Vagliano Trophy team member Danielle McVeigh, along with current internationals Charlene Reid and Victoria Bradshaw.
Niamh Kitching will once again lead Connacht into battle as they go in search of their first victory in the tournament.
