Maguires head Irish challenge

Chris Smart

The brilliant Maguire twins will spearhead a powerful-looking Irish challenge for the Individual European Ladies Amateur Championship over the Noordwijkse course in the Netherlands, starting today.

Irish golfers have been starved of success in this prestigious event over the years, but there is genuine belief that this could be their year.

Three members of the Britain and Ireland Vagliano Trophy team -- Leona Maguire, Danielle McVeigh and Stephanie Meadow -- are in the line-up, together with Leona's sister Lisa, Gillian O'Leary and Charlene Reid.

Leona Maguire took fifth place in the Czech Republic last year, just four strokes behind the winner -- Germany's Sophia Popov -- while Lisa finished joint- 21st.

With Ireland having made the top flight in the European Women's Team Championship, spirits are high but, with 144 players in the field, becoming the champion is a tall order.
