Lowry putts in some practice ahead of Irish Open
THE Irish Open was where it all began for Shane Lowry and his epic victory at Baltray four years ago triggered scenes more like an All-Ireland final.
And there were similar roars again when the Offaly golfer – who was back in his native county at the weekend to watch the hurlers take on Kilkenny – took to the streets of Dublin to try his luck on a "green" of a more unusual nature.
The 26-year-old took on the presenters of Newstalk on a specially built putting green on South King Street to celebrate the radio station's sponsorship of the Irish Open 2013 at Carton House in Co Kildare.
Hundreds of people gathered to shout encouragement – and to have a shot themselves.
Shane, who won the Irish Open as an amateur in 2009, defeating Robert Rock on the third hole of a sudden-death play-off, will return to the competition again in two weeks' time.
He was just the third amateur to win on the European Tour and he turned professional one week later.
Newstalk will be broadcasting live from the Irish Open at Carton House on Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30.
