LEONA MAGUIRE fired a superb two-under-par 70 over the St Leon Rot course in Germany yesterday to keep Ireland in contention at the European Girls Team Championship.

The 17-year-old Slieve Russell star, who is trying to erase the memory of a thoroughly disappointing British Championship, had only one hiccup when she dropped a stroke at the last, having birdied three, seven and 16 in an otherwise immaculate display.

Her twin sister, Lisa, birdied three of the last four holes after double-bogeying the 17th as she posted a highly creditable 72.

Ireland still have work to do to make the quarter-finals. They start today in 11th place on 375 (15-over) -- four strokes behind eighth-placed Scotland. England are the runaway leaders on 22-under-par, 22 strokes ahead of hosts Germany.
