CIAN McNamara celebrates his 27th birthday today – and he couldn't be happier.

Limerick-born McNamara (right), who is attached to Monkstown GC in Cork, produced a career-best performance at the Irish Open by shooting a four-under-par 68 for a dream start at Carton House.

It was all the more remarkable because he spends most of his time giving lessons at Monkstown, but intensive work this week with Eddie Doyle from the Heritage GC tuned McNamara up nicely for a super show on his Irish Open debut.

"Today has been a huge success," he said. "Tomorrow, I'll go out with the same attitude, I won't panic. My goal coming here was to do myself justice and I think I've done that. So now I'll try to squeeze as much as I can out of it."
