Defending champion Colm Campbell knows he must respect Royal County Down if he is to get his Walker Cup campaign up and running and contend for this week's Flogas Irish Amateur Open.

The 30-year old from Warrenpoint is bidding to become the first player to retain the title since Bray's Keith Nolan 20 years ago.

But he knows that he must not become over-aggressive on a firm and fast Royal County Down lay-out that punishes misplaced aggression.

"I can see why it's ranked No 1 in the world," said Campbell, one of nine members of the Walker Cup panel in the 144-man field, along with Conor O'Rourke, Alex Gleeson and Robin Dawson.

"It's a challenge but it's a fair challenge. If you respect it, you have chances out there. I'm struggling to see anybody shooting under par."

US Walker Cup hopeful Stewart Hagestad, who won the low amateur honour at the Masters, is also in action.
