European Ryder Cup captain Pádraig Harrington was understandably rusty as he shot 74 in his first competitive round in more than six months at the K Club Pro-Am yesterday.

The Dubliner (49) had not hit a competitive shot for 195 days as he prepares to return to action in next week's Dubai Duty Free Irish Open at Galgorm Castle in Co Antrim.

His two-over round on the Ryder Cup Course left him tied for 22nd, 10 strokes behind Naas professional Conor O'Rourke, who shot a sensational, eight-under-par 64 to win the PGA in Ireland event by four shots from Glasson's Colm Moriarty.

It was also a long day for the Irish in the European Tour's Open de Portugal at Royal Obidos.

Gavin Moynihan shot a two-over 74 to share 76th place as Niall Kearney carded a 75 and Paul Dunne a 76 to leave them with work to do to make the cut.

Home player Vitor Lopes (24) made an eagle and six birdies in the last group of the day, dropping just one shot as he carded a seven-under-par 65 to lead by two strokes from Spain's Carlos Pigem and France's Damien Perrier.
