Harrington brings over-analysis to new low with angst over choice of footwear

THE suspicion that Padraig Harrington might be over-analysing his career away didn't exactly recede with his failure to make last weekend's Irish Open cut.

Between spectacles and belly putters, Harrington seems lost in an endless fog of experimentation.

But it was the seismic revelation that he was wearing new shoes at Carton House – and the media interest this generated – that maybe captured golf's capacity for a kind of anorak-driven madness best.

Telling the scribes that he was now wearing 'Footjoy M Project', Padraig explained that the shoes were "more about helping your feet work."

How exactly?

"They let your toes spread a bit," explained Harrington.

Don't suppose he ever considered going to work in sandals?
