GUI unveil sponsor for inter-club trophies

The wait for a new sponsor of the GUI annual Cups and Shields is over, as Chartis Insurance Ireland were yesterday announced as the new backers.

An estimated 20,000 golfers and 1,500 club teams annually participate in the first round of the five top inter-club events every year -- the Irish Senior Cup, Barton Shield, Junior Cup, Jimmy Bruen Shield and the Pierce Purcell Shield.

The dream is to win a coveted green pennant for the club and the campaigns culminate in the All-Ireland semi-finals and final, a four-day festival that is unmatched anywhere in the world.

This year's finals will be held at Castlerock Golf Club on September 14-17, with 500 golfers from 20 clubs involved.

Speaking on behalf of Chartis Insurance Ireland, John Boylan, personal lines motor manager, stated: "We are thrilled to have received the opportunity to sponsor the Cups and Shields and fully recognise the importance of these events for the clubs affiliated to the Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI).

"We look forward to what I am certain will be another wonderful year in Irish golf".

Eugene Fayne, president of the GUI, said: "We are indebted to Chartis Insurance Ireland for its sponsorship of this year's Cups and Shields and thank them sincerely for their continued support of Irish amateur golf."

The current champions are: Senior Cup -- Bandon; Barton Shield -- Dunmurry; Junior Cup -- Portumna; Jimmy Bruen Shield -- Clontarf; Pierce Purcell Shield -- The Curragh.
