Gerry Carr, a son of the late Joe, the legendary amateur golfer, has died after a prolonged illness.

A well-known figure in Irish golfing circles, Gerry played a key role in Carr Golf, the travel and golf club management company set up by his brother, Marty.

Gregarious and outgoing, Gerry had many friends in golf.

The timing of his birth proved auspicious and directly influenced the choice of naming him by his father, JB, and his wife, the late Dor.

Gerry was born the week of the 1958 Amateur championship at St Andrews, which was won by JB, and the newborn was duly christened Gerald Andrew - Gerald after Carr senior's great friend, Gerald Micklem, and Andrew after St Andrews.

He is survived by wife Fidelma, sons Jordan and Adam, sister Sibeal, brothers Jody, Roddy, John, Marty, and Brano, Peter and Mary, brothers and sisters-in-law, stepmother Mary, and extended family.

The funeral Mass takes place tomorrow at 1.0pm at Mount Argus Church, followed by cremation at Mount Jerome.
