Fighing Irish gaffe

THE BBC were forced to apologise yesterday after an appalling on-air gaffe by England's former Ryder Cup captain Mark James after Tyrone man Darren Clarke sank a birdie putt at the last to share the British Open lead at Royal St George's.

In response to a suggestion by co-commentator Andrew Cotter that it would be remarkable if Northern Ireland had three Major champions after this weekend, James said: "maybe they will stop fighting each other".

Needless to say, his comments lit up BBC switchboards and sparked a storm on Twitter.
