European seniors tour

DES SMYTH hopes to go out with a bang in his final tournament of the season, the Benahavis Senior Masters at La Quinta.

Smyth is ninth in the Order of Merit with €121,897 earned in a season that brought him one win, at June's Van Lanschot Senior Open in Holland, and the Bettystown native hopes he can add to his haul of five European Senior Tour titles this weekend.

"I'm feeling quite good. I had a bit of a disappointing final round in the last event in Portugal, but I've been playing good golf so hopefully I can get back into the swing of it this week," he said.

"I've a bit of a problem with my knee but I'm hoping I can be up there come Sunday and maybe finish the year on a high," added Smyth, who is joined in Spain by Cork's Denis O'Sullivan and Jimmy Heggarty of Northern Ireland.
