Doran's despair as error costs her title play-off

Pat Doran had to settle for runner-up spot in the Senior Ladies British Open Amateur Championship for the second successive year at Belvoir Park, Belfast yesterday.

The Donabate veteran finished with a 54-hole aggregate of 231 -- 15-over par -- to end up just one stroke behind new champion Felicity Christine of Woking. And Doran was annoyed with herself as she dropped a stroke on the final hole to lose the opportunity of glory via a play-off.

Doran reached the turn in the final round in 36 to put herself in pole position, but her problem really came on the short 11th when she slumped to a triple-bogey six after getting into all sorts of trouble.

After that however she got her act together and until the bogey at the last appeared to be in with an excellent chance of becoming the first Irish winner since the legendary Mary McKenna in 2001.

Grange's Sheena McElroy slipped down the leaderboard and finished joint-ninth after a closing 80. Strabane's Helen Jones was just behind her.
