Dawson the ace in the pack for Irish
Robin Dawson hit a hole in one on the Hotchkin course at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire as he led the early Irish challenge in the English Open stroke-play championship for the Brabazon Trophy.
Dawson produced his ace on the fifth in his five-under par 68, which left him two strokes adrift of Englishman Todd Clements, in joint third place.
Conor O'Rourke from Naas finished strongly, carding four birdies in the last five holes to post a 71 - the same score as Dubliner Kevin LeBlanc, who fired four birdies on his way to the turn in 32, and John Ross Galbraith from Whitehead.
Knock's Colin Fairweather finished with a double-bogey seven to post a 73, alongside Tiarnan McLarnon.
Rowan Lester and Conor Purcell are well down the field and facing a major battle to make the cut.
