SHANE Lowry's remarkable Irish Open win as an amateur two years ago won't be emulated this year, although the four GUI invitees made a decent start to the tournament.

Walker Cup hopeful and West of Ireland and Irish Close champion Paul Cutler made a spectacular opening to his round by scoring an eagle two on the par-four first hole, and finished on two-under-par 69.

Of the others, Alan Dunbar of Rathmore scored 70, Kevin Phelan, the US-based Waterford golfer, was on one-over 72, while Ballymena's Dermot McElroy also managed to card a 72.
