Classy McGee takes route 66 in race to secure Tour card as Higgins bid stalls
Ruaidhri McGee produced a magnificent second-round effort at the final stage of the Qualifying School for the European Tour at the PGA Catalunya Resort.
McGee shot a sublime four-under 66 around the Tour course, including seven birdies, to leave him on six-under-par for the tournament and in a share of eighth position.
The Belfast star is just four behind leader John Hahn after the American carded a 66 around the Stadium Course to sit at 10-under.
Kevin Phelan was also in terrific form around the Tour Course – his three-under 67 for the day put him in a share of 55th position.
Waterford's Phelan has shot up the leaderboard after a disappointing opening round left him in 103rd place on Sunday night.
Kerry's David Higgins also remains in touch despite a frustrating second round.
Higgins was three-under par after the opening round but a one-over 73 on the Stadium Course has dented his hopes.
He is alongside Phelan in joint-55th and will need another round like his first to have a realistic chance of obtaining his Tour Card.
Dermot McElroy's chances of making it into the top 25 this week took a blow after a poor two-over-par 74 put him on level-par and in a share of 81st place.
He will also need a repeat of his opening round to climb his way back up the leaderboard and avoid the cut after 72 holes.
