Clarke boost will make it an easy Ryder for McIlroy

Peter Hutcheon

RORY McIlroy has fired out an early Ryder Cup warning to the USA by claiming that Darren Clarke's appointment as vice-captain can help him shoot Europe to glory at Celtic Manor.

The two Ulstermen linked up yesterday to win the Lough Erne Challenge against Shane Lowry and Padraig Harrington and McIlroy believes that having his fellow countryman in the Ryder Cup ranks will bring out the best in him.

"I think it will be great to have him there, for myself especially because Darren has played five Ryder Cups now and if anyone knows what it's all about, it's him," he said.

"I'm very excited that Darren is going to be involved and I'm sure he is going to bring a lot to the team-room.

"It will make me feel more at ease just because I know if there's anything I need to ask him, he is going to be around."
