MALAHIDE member Paddy Conlon has a question: does anybody know who won the Best Cup in 1965?

Conlon, the organiser of this popular event for handicaps of 19 and over, feels this is a gap in history that needs to be filled, as the Best Cup is set to be staged for its 50th year.

The draw for round one takes place tonight in Malahide GC.

The Best Cup, originally founded to fill a gap in inter-club competition for the 'bunnies' of the game, was first called 'The Inter-Club Rabbits Cup'.

Four clubs, Bray, Hermitage, Newlands, and Malahide, originally took part in the event, but its popularity spread and now it's open to clubs based within 25 miles of the GPO. Last year, Hollystown came out tops of a starting entry of 37 clubs, beating Newlands, who included former Shamrock Rovers star Ronnie Nolan in their ranks.

Bertie Best, who died in March 1993, effectively ran the Malahide Friday Nighters from 1961-1980 and took over the running of the Inter-Club Rabbits Cup in 1964. The name of the trophy was changed to the Best Cup in the 1970s following a proposal by Forrest Little GC.

Best was also involved in the DUGSA (Dublin United Golf Societies Association).
