Neil Ó Briain is still in contention to earn a European Tour card after opening with a two-over-par 73 in the first stage of a qualifying school event at Stoke by Nayland despite a disappointing double-bogey, bogey finish.

The Dubliner heads into today's round eight shots behind Scottish leader Paul Shields (65).

Brian Casey and Peter Williamson are a shot further back on 74.

There were no Irish competitors at the sister event at Ebreichsdorf in Austria, where Argentinian Daniel Barbetti set the pace with a six-under par 64.
