Boost for Irish Open

This year's Irish Open is to have a new title sponsor. Killarney-based Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd are expected to give a special dimension to the concept of local support with a major investment in a second successive staging on the Killeen Course (July 28-31).

Based in the town for more than 50 years, Liebherr employ a workforce of 450 and were associate sponsors last year, when the event was a resounding success. Part of their contribution involved accommodation at the iconic Europe Hotel, which they own. The deal, which is likely to be completed before the end of this month, will come as a considerable relief to the European Tour, who have kept faith with the tournament through difficult times.

Despite the withdrawal of 3 Mobile, the title sponsors in 2009 and 2010, the tour remained fully committed to this year's staging.

It now seems that their faith is to be rewarded. Indeed with Liebherr support, it may be possible to match last year's prize fund of €3m, which seemed very unlikely a few months ago.
