Amateur stars eye North title
Patrick McCrudden opens the defence of his Northern Ireland Amateur Open title at Royal Portrush this morning against one of the strongest fields in the history of the event.
Some of the brightest stars of Irish golf will have the chance to make amends for some disappointing displays in the Amateur Championship at Royal Troon.
Ballymena teenager Dermot McElroy, Paul Dunne of Greystones and Mourne's Reeve Whitson come into that category, while Rory McNamara, who narrowly missed out on qualification at Troon because of one disastrous hole, will be hoping to demonstrate his obvious talent.
Competitors play 36 holes, one round on the Valley course and one on the Dunluce lay-out, and then the top 64 go forward to the knockout phase ending in Friday's final.
