Gold and two silvers for Irish boxers at the European Junior Championships
Kildare's John Joyce has won gold while Martin Stokes and Frankie Cleary settled for silver as Irish boxers excelled in the ring yet again at the European Junior Championship in Anapa, Russia.
Joyce, from the St Michael's Athy BC, was the last Irish boxer into the ring this morning and added to his growing reputation with a split-decision win over home favourite Shakhim Aslimo in the 63kg final.
“It was a fantastic performance from John and we’re absolutely delighted to win the gold medal. All our lads gave it absolutely everything today and they can be very proud of their performances as can our entire squad this week,” said Irish team manager Stephen Connolly.
First into action in Anapa was Frankie Cleary in teh light-flyweight final and there was no joy for the teenager who boxes out of the Olympic BC as he was barrowly beaten by Russia's Umid Rustamov.
Bantamweight Martin Stokes was beaten by England's Ryan Garner and had to be content with silver.
The Irish squad are due to arrive home to Dublin Airport on Sunday morning.
