Belfast Giants ended Coventry Blaze's 100 per cent start to the Elite League season with a 4-2 win at the Odyssey Arena.
Tensions were high with both sides occupying the top two spots in the standings and that was heightened further when it was 2-2 after a see-saw first period.
Derek Lee put the visitors 2-1 up after Jereme Tendler had earlier cancelled out Mike Kompon's opener, but Ray Sawada levelled up on a powerplay.
After both sides drew a blank in the second period it was Belfast who seized control in the final stanza as goals from Jeff Mason and Mark Garside wrapped up the win.
Nottingham Panthers slipped to a 6-1 defeat to Hull Stingrays in their Elite League/Challenge Cup clash at the National Ice Centre.
The current cup holders were 5-0 down early in the third period thanks to braces from Eric Galbraith and Cory Tanaka and one from Zach Hervato.
Even though the Panthers got on the scoreboard through Bruce Graham, Tanaka completed his hat-trick to round off the rout.
Elsewhere in the cup, Sheffield Steelers fell to a penalty shootout defeat to Cardiff Devils 3-2 at home, with Jake Morissette and Joey Martin scoring in the shootout for Cardiff.
North of the border, Edinburgh Capitals lost 3-2 to Dundee Stars and Fife Flyers thrashed Braehead Clan 4-0.
