Slattery leads Kingdom to 'B' semi-final
Bord Gáis Energy U-20 'B' HC: Kerry 3-21 Wicklow 0-11
Kerry advanced to the semi-final of the U’20 ‘B’ Hurling Championship with a 19-point win over Wicklow at Semple Stadium and will now meet Meath next Saturday.
Kerry were the better side in the opening half and led at the interval 0-12 to 0-9 thanks to 0-6 from Michael Slattery, while Gary Hughes contributed all but one of Wicklow’s tally. Kerry were dominant down the middle with Evan Murphy a colossus at centre-back along with Bryan McAuliffe and Seán Sheahan until he got injured on the stroke of half-time .
Donal Hunt and Dan Goggin hurled well around the middle while Gavin Dooley displayed his skill-set with Michael Slattery a constant thorn in the Wicklow defence.
Slattery had a penalty brilliantly saved by Wicklow ’keeper Cian Staunton in the 18th minute but it mattered little as Wicklow were too reliant on Garry Hughes up front.
Kerry took over in the second half with goals from Michael Kelliher, Gavin Dooley and Slattery, who also saw a rasper come back off the bar, as Wicklow folded in the final quarter and Kerry eased to victory.
