UL overcome absence of Tony Kelly as McGrath and Bennett combine to terrorise NUIG
UL 2-21 NUIG 2-12
UL shrugged off the absence of Ballyea’s Tony Kelly to make light work of NUIG, with John McGrath and Stephen Bennett hitting 1-5 each.
Gearoid Hegarty landed four points for Brian Lohan’s side.
Playing with a strong gale in the opening half, NUIG needed a strong start but it was UL who took control when McGrath netted on 13 minutes.
Niall Mitchell kept NUIG in touch from frees but UL went in at the break 1-10 to 0-9 in front.
UL put the game beyond doubt in the opening five minutes of the second half by scoring 1-4 without reply. Bennett got the goal with a deft flick from Hegarty’s long delivery.
Mitchell soon goaled from a 21-metre free but UL responded with two McGrath frees and a superb David Fitzgerald effort.
A well taken goal by Sam Conlon briefly threatened a comeback but UL finished strongly with Bennett landing two fine points.
