Stephen 'Picky' Maher scores astonishing 3-12 as DJ Carey's IT Carlow set up quarter-final clash with UL
GMIT 0-11 IT Carlow 6-20
IT Carlow manager DJ Carey said he was delighted his side kept up the pressure as they hammered the 13 men of GMIT to secure a quarter-final spot at Carnmore in Galway.
IT Carlow needed to win big to overhaul champions Mary I at the top of Group A, but a 27-point win wasn’t enough to get a home quarter-final.
Stephen Maher scored 3-12, while Mark Russell, Jack Fagan and Chris Bolger also netted for the winners. Darragh Burke scored nine points for GMIT but Richard Doyle and Jarlath Mannion were sent off for second yellows in the second half, and their cause faded.
“We had to try and win with a huge score today to try and make up the difference on Mary I. But we are delighted with how we performed and we kept going,” said Carey.
Carey's side will face UL in the last eight in what promises to be a mouthwatering game.
