St Mary’s College1-11 NUI Galway1-11 (St Mary’s win on free-kicks)
Liam Rafferty kicked the winner in a free-taking competition as St Mary’s stunned NUI Galway to reach the Sigerson Cup third round.
Nathan Mullen’s first-half goal seemed to have settled NUI Galway after Aaron Boyle had converted a penalty for Mary’s, but after late points from Rafferty and Daniel McKinless, Rafferty and Niall Toner kicked the winning frees.
This was a tempestuous encounter and NUI Galway’s Patrick O’Donnell and St Mary’s Ryan McSherry were sent off as full-time approached.
NUI Galway were 1-4 to 1-2 ahead at half-time and when Kevin McDonnell added two more, NUIG led by two with seven minutes left, but Mary’s forced extra-time. Stephen McConville levelled it and Mary’s showed their nerve to win on frees.
