IT Carlow manager DJ Carey was thrilled after another hard-fought victory as Jack Fagan hit 2-2 to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Fitzgibbon Cup at Dangan in Galway.

The hosts were 1-9 to 0-8 ahead at half-time after John Fox’s early goal, but Fagan scored two crucial goals in the second half to put last year’s beaten finalists into the knockout stages.

“This is a great win. We knew coming up here it was going to be a really tough one,” said Carey.

All-Ireland-winning manager Micheál Donoghue was in attendance, and it was a star-studded NUIG team with three of Galway’s All-Ireland winning side — Conor Whelan, Cathal Mannion and his brother Pádraic.

But a dominant 10-minute spell either side of half-time saw IT Carlow score 1-6, with just a point in response from Whelan.

NUIG had the perfect start when Fox pirouetted and finished past Enda Rowland after five minutes.

When Cathal Mannion scored a stunning effort from the left wing, NUIG held a six-point lead but that changed after half-time.

Charles Dwyer brought the deficit back to a goal, and then Fagan caught Kavanagh’s delivery and kicked past Shane Hennessy to the net.

The Waterford full-forward sealed the win nine minutes from time when he flicked the ball into the NUIG goal from close range.
