Wing-back Patrick O Donnell scored three points from play for NUI Galway and then was shown the black card in injury time as NUI Galway overcame the Garda College in Templemore.

In a very competitive encounter,  the decisive period came just before half-time when the Galway lads shot five points without reply to establish a lead they never subsequently relinquished.

They were trailing 0-2 to 0-4 when midfielder Peter Cooke started their surge in the 23rd minute. Points also followed from Patrick O Donnell, Jack Robinson, Nathan Mullen and Cooke again for an interval lead of 0-7 to 0-4.

Garda raised the tempo of their game in the second half but some determined defending by NUIG kept them at bay. With the game going into injury time and two points between the sides, Galway’s Patrick O Donnell was black-carded when he pulled down Garda’s Paul Mannion but NUIG held their nerve in a tense finish to qualify to meet Jordanstown next week in the quarter-finals of the Sigerson Cup.

O Donnell was one of the key men for NUIG with Kieran Molloy, Peter Cooke, who kicked five points from frees, Enda Tierney, Jack Robinson and Nathan Mullen others to shine.

For Garda College, Ciaran Duggan, Jonathan Ryan, Paul Mannion,  and Paul Varley did most.

NUIG scorers – P Cooke(0-05,5fs), P O Donnell(0-3),N Mullen, J Robinson, O Gallagher(0-1 each);

Garda scorers – J Ryan(0-3,2fs), P Mannion(0-3,1f),, D Masterson, R Carolan, D Meehan(0-1 each);
