Independent.ie Fitzgibbon Cup results - Limerick colleges and UCC make impressive starts
It was a busy opening day of action in the Independent.ie Fitzgibbon Cup this afternoon.
Reigning champions Mary Immaculate College opened up the defence of their title with a facile 2-31 to 0-16 win over GMIT at the MICL Grounds.
Darragh O'Donavan was accurate from placed balls with Limerick star Cian Lynch also prominent.
Tipperary All Star John McGrath was in flying form as UL capitalised on home advantage with a 2-23 to 0-16 over Cork IT.
The Premier star amassed 1-7 in an eye-catching performance
Trinity College returned to the Fitzgibbon Cup after a 15-year absence but were on the receiving end of a 4-21 to 0-7 from Davy Fitzgerald's LIT.
All four goals came in the opening half at Moylish.
UCC had 18 points to spare over Ulster University on a scoreline of 5-13 to 2-4 at the Mardyke.
In the three evening games, DJ Carey's IT Carlow side had too much for DIT and had 12 points to spare in the end, DCU beat WIT by seven points and in Group D, UCD were the victors over Maynooth University in Belfield.
