A goal from man-of-the-match Chris Healy in the 16th minute proved the difference as IT Carlow edged a low-scoring Sigerson Cup against IT Tralee.

The visitors never led but could have claimed victory at the death when midfielder Damien Somers saw his close-range volley go just the wrong side of the posts.

The Kildare man's goal helped Carlow to a 1-2 to 0-3 half-time lead but Tralee were soon level with points from full forward Conor Keane and Paul O'Donoghue's free.

The hosts responded with a fine point from play from centre-forward Anthony Dever. They stretched their lead to 1-7 to 0-6 by the 51 minute, with the help of an inspirational point from centre back Carolan Wood.

Thomas O'Connell, Caolan Ward and Niall Kane defended valiently for the winners for whom midfielder Tipperary's Mark Russell was black-carded on 40 minutes. His replacement, Ray Cahill, kicked two vital frees.
