Gleeson returns as WIT keep their Fitzgibbon hopes alive
WIT 4-15 Trinity College 1-8
AUSTIN Gleeson returned from suspension as Waterford IT got off the mark in group C.
But the former champions have an uphill task on their hands if they want to reach the quarter-finals, with their final group game against Limerick IT essentially a must-win encounter.
Hurler of the Year Gleeson came through the hour against Trinity last night as WIT eased to a comprehensive victory, finally seeing off dogged opponents with a blistering scoring blitz in the second half.
A pair of goals from Shane Ryan helped WIT lead by 2-6 to 1-4 at the break, before Joe O’Connor and Andrew Joyce added second-half strikes.
Cian O’Sullivan hit 1-6 for Trinity, including a long-range goal from a sideline cut that deceived Mark Fanning, and six frees.
Spirited Trinity clawed their way back to within three points – 2-7 to 1-7 - before wind-assisted WIT pulled clear.
Everything now hinges on that final group game with Davy Fitzgerald’s LIT.
