Waterford’s All-Ireland U-21 winner DJ Foran scored 10 points for UCD in a comfortable first-round win over Maynooth in the Fitzgibbon Cup at Belfield.
CD started well, with Wexford’s Jack O’Connor and Waterford’s Tadhg de Burca striking impressive long-range points early on.
Maynooth capitalised on their opponents’ wayward shooting by levelling the game twice inside the opening quarter thanks to Kilkenny’s Pádraig Walsh.
Foran came to the fore with a converted free on 10 minutes the first in a run of five scores (two from play) on the bounce for the Waterford forward. Brian Molloy’s point in the 19th minute the only reply from Maynooth.
Nicky English’s men were in control and Foran reeled off another two frees to leave the hosts with a 0-14 to 0-5 half-time lead.
Daragh Egerton and Molloy reeled off two points as a spirited Maynooth managed to outscore UCD by a point in the second half but the hosts never looked in any real bother.
