DIT keep Fitzgibbon Cup hopes alive with rout of GMIT
DIT 3-15 GMIT 0-11
DIT manager Derek Brennan is thrilled his side remain in contention after they cruised past GMIT at Carnmore.
Westmeath’s Derek McNicholas scored 1-4 for the Dublin college, while Wexford’s Jack Guiney gave an inspirational display at centre-back.
Liam Blanchfield and Sean Keating hit the other goals for DIT, who led 2-11 to 0-4 at half-time.
“It was hard ground out with the conditions – it was a tough old battle,” said Brennan. “This win has kept us in the competition, and next Tuesday we have Mary I at home. That will be no easy task, but after this we will be optimistic.”
McNicholas and Blanchfield scored goals in the 20th and 28th minutes respectively as the visitors took advantage of the breeze.
GMIT fought back in the second half, with Alan Ward scoring seven points, but it was never going to be enough, and substitute Keating finished them off with his effort with ten minutes remaining.
