D J Carey’s IT Carlow hurlers got their Fitzgibbon Cup campaign off to a flying as they led visitors DIT from start to finish of this entertaining first round Group tie tonight.

The home side hit the ground running and, despite playing into the wind, were 2-5 to 0-2 ahead midway through the opening half, their goals coming from corner forwards Jack Fagan and Chris Bolger in the 7th and 12th minutes.

DIT were handed a lifeline in first-half injury time when a speculative shot from midfield by Tipperary’s Bill Maher wound up in the Carlow net, as Carey’s men led 2-8 to 1-7 at the break.

IT Carlow stretched the lead through Jack Fagan and Laois county man Charles Dwyer before Cian O’Donoghue responded for the visitors.

Victory was wrapped up with a goal from Bolger’s ground stroke on 54 minutes, followed minutes later by another goal from substitute Michael Redmond.

IT Carlow were worthy of their nine-point margin with Stephen (Picky) Maher of Laois top-scoring with 0-8.
