O'Connell turns tide for Longford
Longford 1-9 Carlow 0-8
An opportunist 52nd-minute goal from full-forward Darragh O'Connell turned this Leinster MFC Round 4 tie in Longford's favour to keep their provincial championship hopes alive at Netwatch Cullen Park.
With the scores tied at 0-7 apiece, Carlow goalie Kuba Budzisz advanced from his goal in possession; the ball was turned over some 25 metres from goal and O'Connell measured his shot to the back of an empty net.
After an even first half Carlow led 0-5 to 0-3, having kicked six wides. A fine individual point on 39 minutes from left half-forward Patrick McDonnell put the hosts into a three-point lead (0-7 to 0-4).
But Longford hit back strongly, led in attack by Cian Dooner, the Longford No 15, who proved a torn in Carlow's side throughout the game and finished with a tally of 0-7, 0-5 from play, a hugely significant contribution in a low-scoring game.
Carlow were toothless in attack and could only manage three second-half points as the sharper work of the Longford attack proved the major difference between the sides.
