Martin Breheny: Is meddling trivia the best you've got Minister?

Consider this nugget of nonsense from Sports Minister Patrick O'Donovan as part of his 'big idea' to have female representation of at least 30 per cent on all sports governing bodies by 2019.

"Teenage girls are not receiving adequate support and there are nowhere near enough female role models to inspire them," he wrote.

So how will State interference in administration help? Does he really believe that the female population will feel liberated by Government insistence that they help run sports organisations, whether or not they are interested.?

What next? An open-top bus welcome home for the women elected onto the GAA's Central Council?

Let's call this for what it is - meddling trivia of no consequence.

As Muhammed Ali might have said: 'Is that all you've got, Patrick?'

If so, it would have been best kept to yourself.
