Niamh Carr loved sport from the throw-in, writes Niall Scully.

"The family were very involved in sport. It was something that was always there," she says.

Carr enjoyed athletics and soccer. Then the tide changed when she went to secondary school.

"I began to play Gaelic football then and it was something that I wanted to give 100 per cent to," she explains.

"It meant giving up the other sports, and I have been fully focused on football for the last few years."

That focus led to her wearing the Donegal jersey. She travelled to the offices of AIG in the capital yesterday for the announcement of its new sponsorship deal with ladies football.

She feels the sport is in a much better place now. And the 20x20 campaign has made quite an impact.

"I have seen bigger crowds coming out to watch ladies football. And once they have been at a match, they want to come back. It's a great campaign, and it's definitely progressing.

"The profile of women's sport is increasing, and attracting more girls to play sport will help even more."
