Nine points from Brian Verling saw Cloughduv claim Munster club junior hurling honours, finishing strongly to see off Ballinameela in Mallow yesterday.

The Cork side trailed early on, but finished the first half well to lead by 0-8 to 0-6 at half-time, and they retained the upper hand in the second period.

Waterford's Ballinameela had a 0-4 to 0-2 lead after 14 minutes, but the first two of Brian Verling's scores, both frees, had Cloughduv level.

While Ballinameela enjoyed a lot of possession, they failed to translate that to scores. They were ahead again on 18 minutes, but it was the last time.

Cloughduv were in a commanding position at the break. Though Brendan Phelan replied for Ballinameela on the resumption to reduce the deficit, Cloughduv's response was ultimately the winning of the game.

After Andrew Cronin made it 0-9 to 0-7, Brian Verling added three more, to make it 0-12 to 0-7. Brendan Phelan did reply and, after another for Cloughduv's Mark Walsh, Jim Curran was unlucky to hit the post with a goal effort. Cloughduv made the most of that let-off and Joe Ryan added two more to leave them seven clear with ten minutes left.

Cloughduv now meet Kilkenny's Dunnamaggin in the All-Ireland semi-final.

Scorers - Cloughduv: B Verling 0-9 (7f), M Walsh, M Verling, J Ryan 0-2 each, J Moynihan, A Cronin 0-1 each. Ballinameela: Brendan Phelan 0-6 (5f), P Curran 0-2, D Phelan, J Curran, Brian Curran 0-1 each.

Coffey's goals key for Dunnamaggin

Leinster club JHC final: Dunnamaggin 3-17 Na Fianna 1-11

Kilkenny champions Dunnamaggin will enjoy Christmas, but in the New Year they will be going hell for leather for honours in the All-Ireland club junior hurling championship.

That was the promise from team selector and former Kilkenny captain Tom Hickey when the Noresiders overcame the stubborn challenge of Na Fianna (Meath) in the Leinster final in Nowlan Park on Saturday.

"We have to make the best of the opportunity in front of us. We might never get another chance," was the message from the All-Ireland captain of 1998, as Dunnamaggin looked ahead to an All-Ireland semi-final against the Munster champions.

On 15 minutes, Dunnamaggin snapped up a goal through top scorer, Ronan Coffey. When they nabbed a second through John Fitzpatrick on 24 minutes, they took a firm grip on things.

At half-time, the winners led by 2-6 to 0-7. Within four minutes of the restart, it was all over bar the shouting, after Na Fianna had been hit for another 1-4 without reply. Again, that man Coffey scored a goal. There was a rush of points from Coffey, Darren Fitzpatrick, Michael Cody and Coffey again, as Na Fianna were left in a hopeless position.

Barry Slevin got the Na Fianna goal.
