UL consider appeal as Browne set to miss final
University of Limerick 2-18 Limerick IT 1-14
Brian Lohan and University of Limerick were last night considering an appeal against Jack Browne's red card in yesterday's independent.ie Fitzgibbon Cup semi-final victory over local rivals Limerick IT.
Browne was sent off in the second half following an off-the-ball incident involving Paul Killeen but Lohan pointed to precedent from 2013, when Mary I's Declan Hannon was freed on appeal for the UCC decider after he was red-carded in the semi-final.
Referee James McGrath, incidentally, was the referee on that occasion, as he was yesterday.
Both teams finished with 14 men as Niall O'Connor was dismissed two minutes from time, for throwing his hurley at Stephen Bennett as he scorched through for UL's second goal. Bennett's strike settled matters as UL, who drafted Clare trio David McInerney, Tony Kelly and Cathal McInerney into their starting line-up, avenged last year's shock quarter-final defeat to LIT.
The competition's hosts bowed out and fatigue may have played a part following Tuesday's victory over IT Carlow.
The absences of Cian Nolan, Peter Duggan and Jamie Shanahan through injury didn't help either, with Alan Dempsey unavailable due to suspension.
Lohan said after the game: "I was up at that (2013) match as well and in fairness to Declan Hannon, it was no more a sending off.
"What's going to happen this time? I don't know."
