Tyrone’s second-half blitz sinks Mayo
Tyrone 2-12 Mayo 1-10
A second-half barrage of 2-9 secured the inaugural Adrian Freeman Cup for Tyrone in this final replay at Ballinamore on Saturday.
Sitting comfortably on a 1-8 to 0-3 interval lead, Mayo were dominant in the first half as an opportunist goal from Sam Forde set the Connacht champions alight as they hit five unanswered points, two apiece from Bryan Peoples and Sean Kenny, and a superb effort from Paul Lambert.
But the class act was Branan Molloy, who took over in the second half as Tyrone began to impose their greater physicality, his fine goal putting the game to bed nine minutes from time.
Misfortune visited Mayo when a harmless ball along the ground from John Campbell slipped past Mayo goalkeeper Ryan Kilbane, to put them 1-9 to 1-8 ahead, 11 minutes into the second half as Tyrone hit 2-6 without reply.
