This time there was no benevolence from Kilkenny as they kept Galway at arms length in this Leinster hurling semi final replay in a packed Tullamore.

T J Reid was in inspired form, hitting 2-11 in all, as Galway's touch badly deserted them.

Reid scored an early goal, quickly cancelled out by Jason Flynn at the other end, and converted every one of the nine frees awarded to Kilkenny in the first half as they led by 1-11 to 1-9 at the break.

Brian Cody made a raft of changes beforehand, five in all including the enforced replacement of the injured Richie Power for whom Tommy Walsh came in and started at wing forward.

Brian Hogan's return to centre back allowed Jackie Tyrrell to revert to left corner back where he delivered a magnificent performance of forceful and intelligent hurling throughout.

In front of him Cillian Buckley had a great first half and it was Kilkenny's dominance in the middle third which really told.

Joe Canning, Galway's hero six days earlier, never got a foot hold on the game, his only score  coming off a superbly pointed sideline while Johnny Glynn's aerial power never manifested.

It was left to Conor Cooney to keep Galway in touch with 12 points, three from play.

Kilkenny stretched their lead to six points at one stage in the second half and when Galway had reduced that to just three Aidan Fogarty's shot through a crowded goal mouth found the net after Colm Callanan had saved from Padraig Walsh on 52 minutes.

Fogarty's goal gave Kilkenny a 2-15 to 1-12 lead and they were able to close the game out from there as Tyrrell and J J Delaney held firm.

Reid got his second goal near the end, winning a puck out and getting inside the cover to establish a seven point lead.
