'The weight of expectation is off Joe Canning's shoulders' - Jackie Tyrrell on why Galway will edge final
Kilkenny legend Jackie Tyrrell says the weight of expectation is off Joe Canning's shoulders going into Sunday's All Ireland final against Waterford.
Canning's monstrous point secured a last-gasp win for Galway over Tipperary in the semi-final and Tyrrell says the westeners have a plethora of options in the forward line - and that will be the difference against Derek McGrath's Waterford.
"I think the final will be won and lost in the Galway forward line," Tyrrell told Independent.ie.
"The wave of expectation is off Joe Canning's shoulder, he is playing a different role. Conor Whelan has really stepped up this year, consistently getting four, five, six points per game.
"Add in the two Cooneys, they just have a load of guys who can step up, a wide spread of forwards who can contribute."
Conor Gleeson misses out for Waterford through suspension and he is a player that will be sorely missed by the Déise, according to Tyrrell.
"You can't underestimate the loss of Conor Gleeson. He shut down Richie Hogan in the game against Kilkenny, he did a good job detailing Conor Lehane in he semi-final so his loss and his man-marking ability will be a huge loss for Waterford."
