Staunton the comeback king
Wicklow 3-14 Louth 0-6
Wicklow bounced back from an opening Kehoe Cup defeat with a victory against Louth. The home side were the better team throughout.
Wicklow led by 1-06 to 0-03 at half-time with Daniel Staunton scoring a wonderful goal. Diarmuid Masterson's line ball came in low but Staunton caught and buried it.
Louth relied on free-takers Paddy Lynch and Liam Dwane and an excellent point from Seaghan Connelly for their first-half scores. They had two good goal chances on 24 minutes, the second was blocked by Wicklow centre-back Luke Maloney.
Wicklow scored freely in the second half and Padraig Doran hit over a point on the run. Louth's Liam Dwane scored his side's three second-half points, all frees, as the Wicklow defence were comfortable. Louth's problems increased when Mike Lyons was shown a second yellow card with 10 minutes to go.
A poor Louth puck out gave possession to Anto Byrne and he finished into the roof of the net for Wicklow's second goal, and Staunton got the third much like the first. He caught a line ball and batted it in. It was a morale-boosting win for Wicklow, though 16 wides show room for improvement.
