UL saw off a battling DCU side to claim the FItzgibbon Cup in Mallow this afternoon after a closer than expected six-point win.

Tipperary star Jason Forde finished with 1-10 - including 1-1 from play - while his county team-mate John McGrath chipped in with two points from play.

However, it was DCU who struck the first goal of the game, with Patrick Curran converting a penalty in the first half to give the Dublin college - who were competing in their first ever Fitzgibbon Cup final - a two-point lead.

However, favourites UL battled back well before the break and hit the net themselves when McGrath teed up Forde to hammer home.

After leading 1-9 to 1-7 at the break, UL hit a purple patch in the second period where they reeled off a flurry of scores. Substitute Pat Ryan scored their second goal seven minutes from time to seal victory, before DCU's Conor Bourke responded with a consolation goal.
