Shane O'Donnell goal puts the seal on stroll for UCC
UCC 3-19 GMIT 0-8
Competition favourites UCC began their campaign with a straightforward victory at the Mardyke yesterday.
The Cup's record winners, managed by new Dublin boss Ger Cunningham, took a while to get going but goals from Cork stars Alan Cadogan and Conor Lehane had them 2-10 to 0-3 to the good by half-time.
GMIT's Tadhg Haran opened the scoring, but UCC soon went into a 0-4 to 0-1 lead before Cadogan found the net from Shane O'Donnell's pass on 17 minutes.
Lehane added the second four minutes later and points from Barry Lawton augmented the lead before the break.
The second half was a non-event and UCC led by 2-16 to 0-7 before an 11-minute scoreless period.
With five minutes left, O'Donnell added a third goal, batting home after substitute DJ Foran had a shot saved.
