Scahill turns tide to rescue Mayo and relegate Rossies
Mayo 1-16 Roscommon 0-17
Leading by six points at one stage in the second half (0-14 to 0-8), Roscommon appeared to be on their way to Division 2B salvation only to be hit by a late burst from Mayo in this relegation play-off at MacHale Park on Saturday.
The result means Roscommon are relegated without having won or even drawn a game, while Mayo retain their status by the skin of their teeth, beating the Rossies for the second time in a week, the sides having met in the final league round last weekend.
The score which turned this game in favour of the home side came in the first of six minutes of stoppage time when the Roscommon goalkeeper David Dowd had his clearance half-blocked and there to pounce and rifle the ball to the net was substitute Corey Scahill, as Mayo, who trailed by a point at that stage, went two ahead.
Kenny Feeney, who finished on ten points, added a point from play for good measure to push the gap to three, Eamon Flanagan producing a late point for the visitors.
It was Roscommon who deservedly led by 0-9 to 0-7 at the break, but nine wides in that first half were to come back to haunt them, but not as much as letting a six-point lead slip from their grasp as substitute Robbie Fallon made a huge impact when introduced for that second half.
Mayo kept chipping way and were rewarded for perseverance, while the accuracy of Feeney was a huge factor in securing a win.
