Ryan guides Dublin past battling UCD
Dublin 4-15 UCD 3-12
Paul Ryan bagged 2-7 as Dublin eased past UCD at a bitterly cold Belfield to get their Walsh Cup campaign off to a winning start.
The Dubs fielded a fairly experienced line-up and they opened up an early three-point lead thanks to scores by Ryan, Niall McMorrow and Cian Mac Giolla Bhríde.
However, Oisin O'Rorke pounced for an clinical levelling score for UCD in the ninth minute before the Dubs regained their ascendancy with two excellent goals in quick succession from Eamonn Dillon and Ryan at the end of the first quarter.
Dublin lost their way somewhat from that juncture with O'Rorke adding a fortuitous second goal on the half-hour mark with his hat-trick completed from a free in added time to earn a 3-8 to 2-6 interval lead for the students.
They failed to build on that momentum after the break with Ryan scrambling a goal for Dublin in the 40th minute, and the contest was effectively settled as Dillon completed his brace seven minutes from time.
